Stepping into the shoes of an Immigrant

Time Needed: ~ 30min.

Essential Questions:

How does it feel to be an immigrant?

What hardships do immigrants face?

 

Materials Needed:

  • Journal
  • Book-  Painted Words/Spoken Memories by Aliki Brandenberg
  • KWL chart
 

 

Objectives:

  • SWBAT  reflect on how they would feel if they couldn’t communicate with others
  • SWBAT brainstorm on what they could do if a new classmate came into the classroom without being able to speak the same language
 

 

Lesson Context:

This is a continuation to lesson two.  We are covering all the aspects that comes with the term immigration.  We covered the meaning of the word immigration, why immigrants leave their native countries, and now will cover what does it feel to be in a foreign country.  This lesson emphasizes in the challenges that come with the process of coming to the US.   

 

Lesson Opening:

  • Read part one Painted Words to the class.
 

Procedures:

·         Tell students to reflect on their journals.  I will have them reflect on what it would be like to be in Marianthe’s situation and if they were the classmates of Marianthe what would they to communicate and make her feel welcome.  They could also write about what they would do if a classmate was making fun of her just like Patrick did in the story.

 

 

Closing:

  • Read section two Spoken Memories
  • Add more to the What we Learned column. (The KWL chart should be growing with information as the lessons continue.)
